Is Shopify Hydrogen the same as headless Shopify?

No. Headless Shopify is the broader architectural model where the frontend is separated from Shopify's backend commerce capabilities. Hydrogen is Shopify's own tooling for building custom storefronts. Shopify also supports other headless approaches through the Storefront API. Its current documentation includes Hydrogen, Hydrogen React and framework-independent headless options. Therefore, choosing headless Shopify does not automatically mean that Hydrogen must be the frontend technology.

Is Hydrogen only available for Shopify Plus?

Hydrogen should not be evaluated purely as a Shopify Plus feature decision. The more important question for an enterprise business is whether its customer experience and system architecture justify a separately maintained frontend. Complex headless projects typically introduce additional requirements around integrations, content, analytics, release management, localisation and engineering ownership. Those considerations usually have more impact on the investment case than simply determining whether the storefront technology can technically be used.

Is Hydrogen better than a Shopify theme?

Neither architecture is universally better. A Shopify theme is usually more efficient when the required customer experience fits Shopify's native storefront model.
